چکیده

We present the design, fabrication process, and characterization of a multimodal tactile sensor made of polymer materials and metal thin film sensors. The multimodal sensor can detect the hardness, thermal conductivity, temperature, and surface contour of a contact object for comprehensive evaluation of contact objects and events. Polymer materials reduce the cost and the fabrication complexity for the sensor skin, while increasing mechanical flexibility and robustness. Experimental tests show the skin is able to differentiate between objects using measured properties. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Development of polyimide flexible tactile sensor skin

We present the development of a polyimide-based two-dimensional tactile sensing array realized using a novel inverted fabrication technique. Thermal silicon oxide or Pyrex R © substrates are treated such that their surfaces are OH group terminated, allowing good adhesion between such substrates and a spun-on polyimide film during processing through what are suspected to be hydrogen bonds that c...

The mechanical properties of the rubber elastic polymer polydimethylsiloxane for sensor applications

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a commercially available physically and chemically stable silicone rubber. It has a unique flexibility with a shear elastic modulus G ≈ 250 kPa due to one of the lowest glass transition temperatures of any polymer (Tg ≈ −125 ◦C). Further properties of PDMS are a low change in the shear elastic modulus versus temperature (1.1 kPa ◦C−1), virtually no change in G ver...

Review of Recent Inkjet-Printed Capacitive Tactile Sensors

Inkjet printing is an advanced printing technology that has been used to develop conducting layers, interconnects and other features on a variety of substrates. It is an additive manufacturing process that offers cost-effective, lightweight designs and simplifies the fabrication process with little effort. There is hardly sufficient research on tactile sensors and inkjet printing. Advancements ...

Acquisition of Contact Force and Slippage Using a Vision-Based Tactile Sensor with a Fluid-Type Touchpad for the Dexterous Handling of Robots

Tactile receptors in the skin allow humans to sense multimodal tactile information such as the contact force, slippage, shape, position and orientation of a contacted object. Humans easily control their muscles by feeding back information from tactile receptors. Therefore, tactile sensing is a key factor in enabling robots to imitate skilled human behaviors. Precise control and dexterity in rob...

A Handheld Device for the In Situ Acquisition of Multimodal Tactile Sensing Data

Multimodal tactile sensing could potentially enable robots to improve their performance at manipulation tasks by rapidly discriminating between task-relevant objects. Data-driven approaches to this tactile perception problem show promise, but there is a dearth of suitable training data. In this two-page paper, we present a portable handheld device for the efficient acquisition of multimodal tac...
